Ask a Neurologist

07.03.2008 - Confusing

Question:

I’ve been having petit mal seizures since I’ve been a kid & I was told I had Mesial temporal sclerosis 2 weeks ago & been taking medicines like Tegretol XR & Topamax for it a long time & the Dr. suggested to me to do a anterior temporal lobectomy, but I don’t want to have any surgery. So, now, I’m confused on what I should do.

Reply:

There is no link between Mesial temporal sclerosis and multiple sclerosis. Epileptic neurosurgery should be done in centers specialized for this kind of treatments. A lobectomy sounds very old-fashioned.
