16.06.2008 - Optic neuritus

Question:

I am a 36 year old woman diagnosed in the UK with Relapsing Remitting MS in 2001. I have had no attacks since 2004. I moved to Singapore in June 2006 and though experience fatigue have felt in general "well". I have however been suffering from strange "headaches" over the last couple of months. In fact my head does not ache as much as fell pressured, it is the eye discomfort thats troubling me. I have experience several periods of optic neuritis losing sight for up to 6 weeks at a time in the past but this is not the same.....My vision is affected similar to looking through the wrong glasses....The eye ball feels dry and slightly gritty and the feeling gives a sense of nausea and general "unwellness" I checked my eyes at the optican yesterday who was unable to correct my vision with any lense so took a photographs of the back of my eyes. He confirmed the optic nerves in both eyes to be swollen at the top (though could not confirm if this was from a problem now or a residual effect from previous attackes). He suggested I speak wth a neurologist. Please can you advise me as to what I should do and if in deed this could be MS related? Many thanks in advance of your help.

Reply:

You should consult an ophthalmologist as soon as possible because it seems that you have recurrent optic neuritis. In this case I would further advise you to ask an opthalmologist or neurologist to treat you with methylprednisolone. Further more you should discuss immunomodulary treatment with a neurologist .
