Personal Stories

USA, an ideal friendly destination with a thousand possibilities: Barbara M.

In 1993 the now 47-year-old Barbara M. was diagnosed with MS. Up until then she had been a highly dedicated head nurse. In the last few years, holidays have been for her an opportunity to once more take part in normal social life and enjoy some positive experiences.

My husband and I enjoy flying to the USA, or we take a holiday in Mallorca during the off season. I see to it that we have a rented car and a hotel room with air conditioning. In the last few years I’ve often suffered from bronchitis and various infections, so I avoid humid climates. Unfortunately I’m also troubled by incontinence and chronic colitis. But for flights or longer city tours, I wear diapers or pads. This way I have been able to overcome my fear of being able to participate in ever fewer activities. My experience is that North America is an ideal holiday destination, since the people there are exceptionally friendly and helpful with the handicapped. If I stagger or fall down the stairs, I don’t receive a lot of astonished, reproachful stares. The land of a thousand possibilities offers a great deal that satisfies my husband’s interests as well as suits my own performance capabilities.
